AWAS Point-to-Point Speed Camera Pilot Yet to Launch on KL-Karak and NSE Highways

The pilot phase of the point-to-point speed detection system under Malaysia’s Automated Awareness Safety System (AWAS) has not begun, according to a report by the New Straits Times. The transport ministry confirmed that no official date has been set for the start of testing.

This new system is designed to replace the current fixed speed cameras with a more advanced method that calculates a vehicle’s average speed over a specific distance. By tracking the time it takes for a vehicle to travel between two points, authorities can determine if the speed limit has been violated.

The initial test phase was expected to cover two specific stretches: the segment between the Genting Sempah tunnel and the Gombak rest area on the KL-Karak Expressway, and the section from the Senawang toll to the Simpang Ampat toll on the North-South Expressway (NSE).

Other high-risk routes, including the stretch from the Menora Tunnel to the Sungai Perak rest stop, have also been identified for potential installation in future phases due to their history of accidents.

Although implementation was initially targeted to begin in June, the latest statement from the ministry confirms that preparations are still underway and the pilot has not been activated.

The point-to-point system uses license plate recognition and artificial intelligence to calculate whether a vehicle arrives at its destination faster than legally allowed. It can also detect if drivers stop along the way in an attempt to manipulate their travel time and avoid penalties. If violations are detected, automated summonses will be issued.
