JPJ to Roll Out New SOPs and Rules for Heavy Vehicles in May, Targeting Trucks Over 7.5 Tonnes

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is set to implement updated standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines for commercial and public transport vehicles starting next month. JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the initiative comes in response to a recent increase in road accidents involving large vehicles, particularly heavy-duty lorries.
According to a report by Bernama, the new SOPs will include more rigorous enforcement measures for commercial drivers who break speed limits and put other motorists at risk.

“At the moment, JPJ is in the process of finalizing these new procedures alongside relevant stakeholders. Our main focus is on vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes. These new rules will include tougher penalties for speeding and will also reinforce the ban on such vehicles using the far-right lane on highways, which was previously announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke,” he explained.
Last month, authorities highlighted that the restriction preventing heavy vehicles from driving in the rightmost lane — originally introduced in 2015 — would finally be enforced. This measure is one of five key upgrades the transport ministry plans to roll out.
Additional improvements include the mandatory installation of speed-limiting devices, GPS tracking systems, high-speed weigh-in-motion (HS-WIM) sensors at 11 designated highway points, and an increase in Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras.
