Dongfeng Box to be Previewed in Malaysia – BYD Dolphin Competitor Set to Launch by October 2024
The Dongfeng Box, also known as the Nammi 01 in China, recently made its Malaysian debut at a media preview event. As the Box’s first right-hand drive version, it is set to launch locally later this year. Recall that last November, the Malay Vehicle Importers and Traders Association of Malaysia (PEKEMA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Chinese carmaker Dongfeng Motor Corporation (DFMC), represented by China Dongfeng Motor Industry (DFMIEC).
The MoU between Dongfeng and PEKEMA outlines plans to introduce the Dongfeng Box (S31) electric vehicle to the Malaysian market. While initial units will be imported, there are future plans for local assembly in Malaysia. Once local production commences, the model is expected to be exported to other ASEAN countries.
The Dongfeng Box will directly compete with the BYD Dolphin. In terms of dimensions, the Box measures 4,030 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,660 mm. In comparison, the BYD Dolphin is 4,290 mm long, 1,770 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.
In terms of performance, if the Malaysian model mirrors the China-spec version, the Box will feature a front-mounted, front-wheel drive (FWD) single motor delivering 93 hp and 160 Nm of torque, with a top speed of 140 km/h. The CLTC test results indicate that it has a maximum range of 330 km to 430 km.
Safety specifications for the Malaysian version of the Dongfeng Box have not yet been confirmed. However, if it mirrors the China-spec Dongfeng Nammi 01, it is expected to include Level 2 semi-automatic driving assistance features such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, active cruise control (ACC), and automatic parking.
Originally scheduled for mid-2024, the launch of the Box has been slightly delayed and is now expected to occur by the end of 2024.
