Can Grab’s New EV Service to KLIA Lead the Shift to Greener Transport?

KUALA LUMPUR, 25 June 2025 – Could your next airport ride be electric? Grab Malaysia is betting on it. The e-hailing giant has launched its first electric vehicle (EV) fleet dedicated to airport transfers, marking a bold step toward low-carbon mobility in Malaysia.
The official launch, held at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), was officiated by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. The move supports national sustainability goals, while showcasing the viability of EVs in high-demand transport routes.
Travellers can now book an EV ride directly from KLIA via the Grab app, choosing the new eco-friendly option powered by the BYD M6, a seven-seater electric MPV. Designed for a quiet, smooth ride, the vehicle also features foldable third-row seats to maximise cargo space — a welcome convenience for airport travellers with heavy luggage.

The initiative is the result of collaboration between Grab Malaysia and its ecosystem partners: BYD Sime Motors, Yinson GreenTech, and Power-Up Tech. Together, they aim to accelerate EV adoption and raise public awareness of sustainable transport options in Malaysia.
“By prioritising routes with high visibility and demand such as KLIA, we aim to demonstrate the practicality and comfort of EVs while driving greater awareness among consumers,” said Rashid Shukor, Grab Malaysia’s Director of Country Operations and Mobility.
He added that this move reflects a broader ambition — carbon neutrality by 2040, achieved by shifting public and on-demand transport toward low or zero-emission options.
Minister Anthony Loke praised the launch, describing it as a timely and strategic initiative that aligns with national policy frameworks such as the National Transport Policy 2019–2030 and the Ministry’s Strategic Plan 2021–2025.

“The introduction of EV rides and facilities at KLIA supports our mission to advance sustainable transport while also improving the passenger experience at one of Malaysia’s busiest transport hubs,” he said.
With demand for clean mobility on the rise, Grab’s latest move positions it not just as a tech-driven platform, but as a key player in Malaysia’s transition to a greener and more responsible transportation future.
