From Sweden with Speed: Volvo ES90 Confirmed for Malaysia in Early 2026

Volvo Car Malaysia has officially confirmed that the all-new Volvo ES90, the brand’s latest flagship electric sedan, will be making its way to Malaysian shores in early 2026. The announcement was made by Volvo Car Malaysia Managing Director, Chris Wailes, during a recent media event, adding to the growing excitement surrounding the brand’s bold push into full electrification. The ES90, first unveiled globally in March 2025, will soon join its SUV sibling, the Volvo EX90, which was launched in Malaysia not long ago.
Built on the same SPA2 platform as the EX90, the ES90 brings something refreshingly different to the table. While it’s shorter in length than the EX90, it actually boasts a longer wheelbase of 3,102 mm, offering greater cabin comfort and space. What makes the ES90 truly stand out, however, is its raised ride height of 203 mm, giving it a unique stance that straddles the line between a sedan and a crossover. This distinctive silhouette is enhanced by its sloping roofline, which contributes to it being the most aerodynamic Volvo ever, with a drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd. According to Wailes, this is “not a normal sedan”—and the bold styling proves it.

Globally, the ES90 will be offered with three different electric powertrains, and while the Malaysian market’s exact variant lineup has yet to be confirmed, here’s what we can expect. The base Single Motor variant features a rear-mounted electric motor delivering 245 horsepower and is paired with a 92 kWh battery, offering an impressive range of up to 644 km (WLTP). Next up is the Twin Motor AWD version, which bumps power up to 442 hp and uses a larger 106 kWh battery to stretch the range to 700 km. Topping the lineup is the Twin Motor Performance variant, a dual-motor powerhouse producing a jaw-dropping 670 hp, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, while maintaining the same 700 km range.
Where the ES90 really breaks new ground is in its charging capabilities. It’s the first Volvo to feature 800V architecture, allowing for DC fast charging of up to 350 kW. That means you can regain 300 km of range in just 10 minutes, and a charge from 10% to 80% takes only 20 minutes—putting the ES90 among the quickest-charging EVs in its class. This makes long-distance travel not only possible but incredibly convenient.
Step inside the ES90 and you’re greeted by a high-tech yet minimalist cabin centered around a stunning 14.5-inch vertical infotainment display. It runs on Volvo’s next-generation Volvo Car UX, which integrates Google Built-In—so apps like Google Maps, Assistant, and even Spotify are seamlessly embedded into the system. Underpinning this user interface is the powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, ensuring smooth and responsive performance.
Beyond entertainment, the ES90 is also Volvo’s most digitally advanced vehicle to date. It houses dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chips, giving it a total computing capacity of over 500 trillion operations per second (TOPS). This computing power supports a comprehensive ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) suite that includes five radars, seven cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor—a feature it shares with the EX90. With this level of hardware, the ES90 is not just ready for today’s driving, but is future-proofed for increasingly autonomous driving capabilities.
Chris Wailes also hinted at an exciting roadmap for Malaysia, reaffirming Volvo’s pledge to introduce at least one new EV every year for the foreseeable future. However, the company won’t be abandoning its hybrid offerings just yet, with plug-in hybrids and mild-hybrids still set to be part of the product mix as the market transitions more fully into EVs.

With the arrival of the ES90, Volvo isn’t just bringing in another luxury sedan—it’s introducing a new benchmark for what an electric flagship can be. Its combination of stunning design, class-leading range, lightning-fast charging, and top-tier safety and tech makes it a serious contender against rivals like the BMW i7, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and Lucid Air. For Malaysian EV enthusiasts, 2026 can’t come soon enough.
