Proton Breaks All-Time Domestic Sales Record in August 2026 as e.MAS 5 Drives EV Surge

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton has recorded its strongest-ever month for domestic sales, delivering 20,155 vehicles in Malaysia in August 2026 as strong demand across its conventional and electrified line-up pushed the national automaker to another major sales milestone.

Including 2,477 export units, Proton’s total group sales reached 22,632 units during the month. This represents a 22.7% increase compared with July 2026 and marks the company’s strongest overall monthly performance since January 2010.

The strong August result also puts Proton firmly on track for a significant year in 2026, with 141,421 units sold during the first eight months of the year, representing a substantial 40.2% year-on-year increase.

Based on the forecast Total Industry Volume (TIV), Proton estimates that it captured 27.9% of the Malaysian automotive market in August, lifting its year-to-date market share to 25.6%.

But while Proton’s overall numbers are impressive, the individual models behind the record tell an even more interesting story.

Saga remains Proton’s volume powerhouse

The Proton Saga continued to do much of the heavy lifting for the national automaker, recording 7,347 units in August alone.

Its year-to-date sales have now climbed to almost 60,000 units, putting the Saga 33.3% ahead of the same period last year.

With four months remaining in 2026, Proton is also on course to push the Saga beyond 80,000 units for the full year, further reinforcing the importance of the long-running nameplate to the company’s overall sales performance.

S70 crosses the 3,000-unit mark for the first time

Another major highlight came from the Proton S70, which recorded its best-ever monthly performance with 3,235 units delivered in August.

For the first time since its introduction, the C-segment sedan crossed the 3,000-unit mark in a single month.

The strong result pushed the S70’s 2026 year-to-date sales to 17,953 units, already surpassing its entire sales volume for 2025.

The performance also highlights the growing contribution of Proton’s refreshed product line-up to its current sales momentum.

X50 continues to lead Proton’s SUV charge

The Proton X50 remained another important contributor, registering 2,274 units in August.

Proton continues to hold the X50 as the leading B-segment SUV in Malaysia, maintaining its position as one of the country’s strongest-selling SUVs.

Meanwhile, the larger Proton X90 recorded 471 units during the month.

The seven-seater SUV continues to lead its D-segment category according to Proton, with its year-to-date performance sitting 64% ahead of the same period in 2025.

Proton e.MAS records another major milestone

Perhaps the most significant development beyond Proton’s ICE line-up came from its electrified business.

Proton e.MAS delivered 6,047 units in August, setting another monthly sales record and bringing its 2026 year-to-date total to 27,860 units.

The result further strengthens Proton’s position in Malaysia’s rapidly expanding EV market, with the company stating that all three of its current electrified offerings lead their respective segments.

And one model is clearly doing the bulk of the work.

e.MAS 5 sets new national EV sales record

The Proton e.MAS 5 accounted for 4,818 units in August, making it the biggest contributor to Proton e.MAS’ record-breaking month.

According to Proton, the figure represents a new national monthly sales record for a single EV model in Malaysia.

The e.MAS 7 recorded 613 units, while the e.MAS 7 PHEV achieved 616 units as production of the locally assembled plug-in hybrid continues to ramp up following its line-off ceremony in July.

The numbers underline how quickly Proton’s electrification strategy is gaining momentum, particularly with the e.MAS 5 emerging as a major volume driver.

Proton exports reach highest level in more than 15 years

Proton’s August performance was not limited to the Malaysian market.

The company exported 2,477 Proton and Geely vehicles during the month, marking its highest monthly export volume since January 2011.

That pushed Proton’s 2026 year-to-date export total to 6,059 units, already exceeding the approximately 6,000 vehicles exported during the whole of 2025.

The growing export business is also increasingly tied to Proton’s role in assembling Geely models for overseas markets.

According to Proton, these activities help improve factory utilisation while creating additional opportunities for local vendors and contributing positively to Malaysia’s automotive manufacturing ecosystem.

Proton enters final quarter with strong momentum

August’s results represent more than just another strong sales month for Proton.

The combination of record domestic deliveries, rapidly growing e.MAS sales and stronger exports has created multiple growth engines for the national automaker heading into the final months of 2026.

With 141,421 group sales already recorded in the first eight months, Proton appears well positioned to meet its full-year volume ambitions.

The company also believes its expanding electrified portfolio, growing export activities and continued demand for its ICE models will play an increasingly important role in sustaining this momentum.

For Malaysian buyers, however, the most interesting question may be whether Proton can maintain this pace as the year enters its final quarter, and whether the e.MAS 5 can continue its extraordinary run in the increasingly competitive EV market.

August has certainly set a very high benchmark.
