Perodua UCar-e: A New Mobility Solution That Could Change How Students Move Around Campus

For decades, car ownership has been considered an important milestone for young adults. However, changing lifestyles, rising living costs, limited parking availability, and increasing traffic congestion are encouraging a new generation of consumers to rethink their relationship with mobility.

Recognising this shift, Perodua has introduced UCar-e, a new app-based car rental service designed specifically for university students and staff. The initiative marks another significant step in the national automaker’s broader Mobility as a Lifestyle strategy, focusing on providing convenient transportation access without the responsibilities of vehicle ownership.

Bringing Shared Mobility to Malaysian Universities

The UCar-e programme will initially be introduced at three local universities:

• Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM)
• Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)
• Universiti Teknologi Malaysia – Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (UTM-MJIIT)

As part of the first phase, Perodua will deploy 50 vehicles across the participating campuses. Students and university staff will be able to locate, book, access, and use the vehicles directly through the UCar-e mobile application.

The service is primarily intended to support short-distance travel within university grounds, allowing users to move conveniently between student accommodations, academic buildings, and other campus facilities.

How Does UCar-e Work?

The concept is designed to be simple and user-friendly.

Through the UCar-e application, users can identify available vehicles parked at designated locations around the campus. Once a booking is confirmed, the vehicle can be accessed through the app, eliminating many of the traditional processes associated with vehicle rentals.

After completing their journey, users simply return the vehicle to a designated parking zone, making it available for the next user.

By focusing on campus mobility, Perodua aims to offer a practical transport alternative that is both accessible and affordable for students and staff.

More Than Just Transportation

One of the most interesting aspects of the UCar-e initiative is its operational model.

Rather than relying entirely on external fleet operators, Perodua is collaborating with participating universities to appoint students as vehicle management agents. These students will be responsible for maintaining vehicle cleanliness, monitoring fuel levels, and ensuring the cars remain in good operating condition.

In return, they will receive commission-based compensation for their services.

This approach not only supports the day-to-day operation of the programme but also provides students with valuable entrepreneurial exposure and practical business experience. It reflects Perodua’s effort to create opportunities that extend beyond transportation while helping students develop real-world skills.

Understanding the Shift in Consumer Behaviour

According to Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, younger consumers are increasingly prioritising driving experiences and convenience over traditional vehicle ownership.

This trend is becoming more evident as vehicle maintenance costs continue to rise while urban areas face growing parking constraints and traffic congestion.

For many students, owning a car may not always be practical or financially viable. Services such as UCar-e provide access to transportation only when needed, reducing the financial burden associated with ownership while maintaining mobility and convenience.

The launch of UCar-e demonstrates how automotive companies are adapting to changing consumer expectations. Instead of focusing solely on selling vehicles, manufacturers are increasingly exploring service-based mobility solutions that offer flexibility and accessibility.
