Proton X50 Sport Edition: The King of SUVs Gets a Sportier New Identity for Its Sixth Anniversary
SUBANG JAYA, 8 October 2026 – Six years after making its debut in Malaysia, the Proton X50 is marking the occasion with a new special edition designed to give the popular B-segment SUV a more distinctive and aggressive personality.
Proton has officially opened bookings for the All-New Proton X50 Sport Edition (SE), a new variant based on the flagship X50. Rather than introducing major mechanical changes, Proton has focused on giving the SUV a stronger visual identity, with 15 exclusive exterior and interior enhancements that combine black finishes with contrasting red accents.
For a model that has become one of Proton’s most recognisable SUVs, the Sport Edition represents another step in the X50’s evolution and one aimed squarely at buyers looking for something that stands out from the standard model.
Six Years of the Proton X50
The Proton X50 was first introduced in Malaysia on 27 October 2020, quickly establishing itself as one of the most important models in Proton’s modern SUV line-up.
According to Proton, the X50 has now surpassed 177,000 units in cumulative sales across domestic and export markets, making it the brand’s most successful SUV to date.
The model has also maintained its position as Malaysia’s best-selling B-segment SUV for five consecutive years, highlighting just how significant the X50 has become in the local automotive market.
The new Sport Edition therefore arrives at an important milestone for the model, combining the established flagship specification with a new appearance aimed at customers who want a sportier take on the X50.
A Darker, Sportier Look
The biggest difference with the X50 Sport Edition is immediately visible from the outside.
Proton has adopted a predominantly black exterior treatment, complemented by red accents to give the SUV a more aggressive appearance.
The 15 exclusive enhancements include black treatment for the:
- Front Upper Garnish
- Front Side Port Trim Garnish
- Lower Bumper Garnish
- Rear Side Port Trim Garnish
- 18-inch Alloy Wheels

The Sport Edition also receives dedicated front, side and rear skirtings, giving the X50 a more dynamic profile.
Completing the exterior treatment is a dedicated Sport Edition emblem, making it easier to distinguish the special edition from the regular X50 range.
Rather than completely redesigning the X50, Proton’s approach is relatively straightforward: take the familiar SUV and give it a more aggressive visual character through a combination of darker styling elements and contrasting details.
The Sporty Theme Continues Inside
The changes are not limited to the exterior.
Inside the cabin, the Sport Edition continues with a predominantly black theme, complemented by red stitching on the steering wheel and seats.
The front seats receive dedicated Sport Edition embroidery, while the floor also gets Sport Edition detailing.
Another addition is a set of TPE floor mats, which Proton says are lightweight, flexible and quick-drying.
That may sound like a small detail, but it is particularly relevant for Malaysian owners. With frequent rain and a hot, humid climate, easily removable and quick-drying floor mats can be a practical addition for everyday use.

More Than Just a Cosmetic Package
While the Sport Edition is primarily about appearance, Proton says the new components have also been tested for durability and suitability for Malaysian driving conditions.
The X50 SE has undergone more than 13,700 hours of testing, covering areas including durability, corrosion resistance and UV resistance.
The components were also assessed for their suitability under Malaysia’s tropical climate.
This means Proton is positioning the Sport Edition not simply as an appearance package, but as a set of enhancements that have been validated for long-term use in local conditions.
The Performance Package Remains Familiar
Underneath the new styling, the X50 Sport Edition retains the mechanical package of the flagship variant.
Power comes from Proton’s 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged i-GT engine, paired with a 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT).
The powertrain produces:
181 PS
290 Nm of torque
Proton quotes a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 7.6 seconds, while fuel consumption is rated at 6.1 litres per 100 km.
In other words, buyers choosing the Sport Edition are not trading performance for styling. Instead, they are getting the flagship X50’s existing performance package with a more distinctive appearance.
Technology and Safety Remain at Flagship Level
The X50 Sport Edition also retains the flagship variant’s technology package.
At the centre of the cabin is a 14.6-inch infotainment display, supported by wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The SUV also comes with Proton Link 2.0 and the “Hi Proton” voice command system, which supports both Bahasa Melayu and English.
Safety remains another major part of the X50’s proposition, with 15 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features.
Among the available systems are Auto Park Assist (APA) and a 360-degree HD camera with 180-degree Transparent View, alongside other intelligent driving and safety functions.
For buyers, this means the Sport Edition maintains the core technology and safety features expected from the flagship X50 rather than being a stripped-down special edition focused purely on appearance.
So, What’s Actually New?
The X50 Sport Edition is best understood as a styling-focused special edition built on the flagship X50.
There are no major changes to the engine, transmission or core technology package. Instead, Proton has concentrated on giving the SUV a more exclusive appearance through its 15 exterior and interior enhancements.
For existing fans of the X50, this could make the SE particularly appealing to those who want their SUV to look different without stepping away from the familiar X50 platform.
For new buyers, the key question will ultimately come down to how much they value the Sport Edition’s exclusive styling and whether its final pricing makes sense compared with the standard flagship variant.
Bookings Are Now Open
Proton has confirmed that bookings for the All-New Proton X50 Sport Edition are now open at authorised Proton dealers nationwide.
At the time of the announcement, Proton had not disclosed the pricing for the Sport Edition.
That makes the eventual price an important piece of the puzzle. The X50 SE already brings together the flagship powertrain, technology and safety package with exclusive styling enhancements, but its competitiveness will ultimately depend on how Proton positions it within the existing X50 range.
For now, however, one thing is clear: after six years, the King of SUVs is getting a sportier new look.
And with bookings officially open, the next chapter of the Proton X50 story is about to begin.
