CKD MG S5 EV Now Open for Booking in Malaysia – Estimated RM120k, More Power and 446 km Range

Malaysia’s electric vehicle landscape continues to evolve, and MG Motor Malaysia has taken a major step forward with the introduction of the locally assembled (CKD) MG S5 EV. The first units have officially rolled off the production line at EP Manufacturing Berhad’s (EPMB) facility in Pegoh, Melaka, marking a significant milestone for the brand’s localisation efforts in the country.

With bookings now open and an estimated price of around RM120,000, the CKD MG S5 EV not only becomes the brand’s first locally assembled model in Malaysia but also brings meaningful upgrades in performance, range, and equipment.

A New Chapter for MG’s Local Operations

The start of local assembly signals a new phase for MG Motor Malaysia, strengthening the country’s position in the regional EV ecosystem. The Pegoh facility is expected to play a strategic role not just for Malaysia but also for exports within ASEAN and potentially other markets.

According to SAIC Motor Malaysia Managing Director Emory Qi, the local production of the MG S5 EV reflects the company’s long-term commitment to Malaysia.

Local assembly also allows MG to strengthen the automotive supply chain, support local vendors, and potentially turn the Pegoh plant into a regional export hub, including possible left-hand-drive markets in the future.

Production volume for the MG S5 EV is expected to reach between 120 and 180 units per month, translating to an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles annually in 2026.

More Power Than Before

One of the most notable improvements in the CKD version is its enhanced performance.

The MG S5 EV is powered by a rear-mounted electric motor producing 205 hp (151 kW) and 350 Nm of torque, representing a healthy increase over the previous CBU model’s 170 hp and 250 Nm.

This additional power enables the electric SUV to accelerate from 0–100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds, while top speed is rated at 170 km/h.

Despite the performance boost, MG has also managed to improve efficiency.

Extended Driving Range

The CKD MG S5 EV continues to use the same 62 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, but improvements to the motor and inverter have allowed MG to stretch its driving range slightly further.

The new model now offers a WLTP-rated range of 446 km, up from 430 km previously.

Charging capabilities remain unchanged, supporting:

  • 6.6 kW AC charging
  • 150 kW DC fast charging

Using a DC fast charger, the battery can be replenished from 10% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes.

Owners are also covered by strong warranty coverage:

  • Battery warranty: 8 years / 180,000 km
  • Motor control unit warranty: 8 years / 160,000 km
  • Vehicle warranty: 7 years / 150,000 km

Lux Variant Now the Only Option

Unlike the previous imported lineup that offered multiple variants, the CKD MG S5 EV will be offered in a single Lux variant.

The move comes after CBU units were fully sold out, simplifying the lineup for the locally assembled model.

The Lux variant now receives several comfort upgrades including:

  • Full leatherette upholstery
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Power-adjustable front passenger seat
  • Hands-free powered tailgate

Technology features are expected to remain largely unchanged, including:

  • 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster

The MG S5 EV also continues to offer an extensive ADAS safety suite, featuring:

  • Adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist
  • Blind spot monitoring
  • Lane departure warning
  • Rear cross traffic alert

The SUV also carries five-star safety ratings from both Euro NCAP and ASEAN NCAP.

Early Bird Promotion Worth RM10,000

To celebrate the launch of local assembly, MG Motor Malaysia is offering an Early Bird package worth up to RM10,000 for early customers.

The promotion includes:

  • RM7,000 rebate
  • 7 kW wallbox charger
  • RM1,000 charging credits

Final pricing and full specifications are expected to be announced closer to the official launch, but the estimated RM120,000 price point positions the MG S5 EV competitively within Malaysia’s growing electric SUV segment.

A Stronger Push Into Malaysia’s EV Market

With its improved performance, extended driving range, and more attractive pricing thanks to local assembly, the CKD MG S5 EV could become one of the most compelling electric SUV options in Malaysia’s mid-range EV market.

More importantly, this model represents more than just a new vehicle launch, it signals MG’s deeper commitment to the Malaysian market and its ambition to position the country as a key hub in its regional EV strategy.

For buyers looking to enter the EV segment with a practical, well-equipped SUV, the MG S5 EV might be worth keeping an eye on when final pricing and full specifications are officially revealed.
