Jaecoo J5 EV Launched in Malaysia at RM118,800 – 402 km Range, 211 PS and 130 kW Fast Charging
Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia has officially launched the Jaecoo J5 EV in Malaysia, marking the brand’s first fully electric model in the country. Locally assembled in Shah Alam, the new electric SUV arrives with 211 PS, 402 km of WLTP range and a launch package worth RM10,000.
At RM118,800 on-the-road without insurance, the Jaecoo J5 EV is positioned as an affordable entry point into the brand’s growing electrified lineup.
Interestingly, the J5 EV is only around RM10,800 more than the petrol-powered J5, making the question of whether the additional cost is worthwhile one of the most interesting aspects of this new electric SUV.
And with a launch package that includes one year of unlimited charging, a home charger and several EV accessories, Jaecoo is clearly looking to make the transition to electric motoring more appealing.
A More Electric-Looking J5
The Jaecoo J5 EV retains the overall dimensions and SUV silhouette of the petrol-powered J5, but receives several design changes to distinguish it as an electric model.
The biggest difference can be found at the front.
Instead of the large grille found on the ICE version, the J5 EV gets a more streamlined closed-off fascia with a perforated design, while the lower section incorporates an active grille shutter and aerodynamic elements.
The EV also rides on 18-inch two-tone aerodynamic alloy wheels, while the charging port is positioned on the front-left fender.
At the rear, the overall design remains familiar, although the EV drops the exhaust outlets and gains EV-specific badging. The number “5” in the J5 emblem also receives a blue finish.
Three exterior colours are available:
- Alpine Green
- Fjord Grey
- Carbon Crystal Black
Measuring 4,380 mm long, 1,860 mm wide and 1,650 mm tall, with a 2,620 mm wheelbase, the J5 EV sits firmly in the B-segment SUV category.
Familiar Cabin With EV-Specific Touches
Inside, the J5 EV largely carries over the cabin layout of its petrol sibling, but introduces blue accents to reinforce its electric identity.
The cabin features black faux-leather upholstery with contrasting blue piping and stitching, while the materials retain the J5’s pet-friendly, low-VOC, antibacterial and scratch-resistant characteristics.
Technology is also a major part of the package.
The dashboard is equipped with an 8.88-inch digital instrument display and a large 13.2-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, while occupants also get an eight-speaker sound system and a 50W ventilated wireless charging pad.

35-Litre Frunk Adds Practicality
One advantage of converting the J5 into an EV is the additional storage space created by removing the combustion engine.
The J5 EV offers a 35-litre front trunk, or frunk, alongside a 480-litre rear boot.
Fold the rear seats down and total rear cargo capacity increases to 1,284 litres.
Jaecoo also says the cabin provides 35 individual storage spaces, making the J5 EV a practical proposition beyond simply being an electric vehicle.
211 PS and 7.7-Second 0–100 km/h Sprint
Underneath the bonnet, the petrol engine has been replaced by a front-mounted electric motor producing 155 kW, equivalent to 211 PS, and 288 Nm of torque.
That gives the J5 EV a significant performance advantage over its petrol-powered sibling.
The electric SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.7 seconds, while top speed is rated at 175 km/h.
Compared with the petrol J5’s 1.5-litre turbocharged powertrain, the EV produces an additional 64 PS and 78 Nm.
For drivers who enjoy the instant response associated with electric motors, this should make the J5 EV considerably more energetic around town and during overtaking.
58.9 kWh LFP Battery Offers 402 km WLTP Range
Powering the electric motor is a 58.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by CATL.
The Malaysian-specification J5 EV is rated for up to 402 km of WLTP range, or 461 km according to the NEDC cycle.
That puts the J5 EV in a range bracket that should be sufficient for most daily commuting requirements, while longer journeys will naturally require some charging planning.
The Malaysian model also gets a larger battery than the version sold in Thailand, which uses a 50.6 kWh battery.
130 kW DC Fast Charging
Charging capability is another important part of the J5 EV’s package.
The vehicle supports up to 130 kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to go from 30% to 80% in approximately 28 minutes under suitable charging conditions.
For home charging, the J5 EV supports 11 kW AC charging, with a full 10–100% charge taking approximately seven hours.
The vehicle also supports 3.3 kW V2L, allowing owners to power compatible electrical appliances directly from the vehicle.
This could be particularly useful during camping trips, outdoor activities or even as a temporary source of power during emergencies.
Level 2+ ADAS With 19 Safety Features
The J5 EV comes with six airbags and an extensive suite of driver assistance systems.
Its ADAS package includes 19 features, covering areas such as collision prevention, lane assistance, adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring.

For a vehicle priced below RM120,000, the breadth of standard driver assistance technology will likely be one of the J5 EV’s stronger selling points.
RM10,000 Launch Package Plus Free Charging
Perhaps one of the biggest talking points surrounding the launch isn’t actually the car itself, but the ownership package.
For the first 1,000 deliveries by 31 October 2026, Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia is offering a launch package claimed to be worth RM10,000.
The package includes:

The charging benefit could be particularly attractive to first-time EV buyers, as charging costs are one of the considerations for consumers making the switch from petrol to electric.
Seven-Year Vehicle Warranty
The Jaecoo J5 EV is covered by a seven-year or 150,000 km vehicle warranty.
Its high-voltage battery receives a separate 10-year or 200,000 km warranty.
The model will also be supported by Omoda | Jaecoo Malaysia’s nationwide sales and aftersales network.
So, Is the J5 EV Worth the Extra RM10,800?
With the petrol-powered J5 priced at RM108,000, the J5 EV’s RM118,800 asking price represents an increase of approximately RM10,800.
For that additional amount, buyers get substantially more power, quicker acceleration, zero tailpipe emissions, a 402 km WLTP-rated range, 130 kW DC fast charging, V2L capability and a dedicated EV powertrain.
The launch package further strengthens the proposition, particularly with the inclusion of one year of unlimited charging and a 7kW home charger.
At the same time, the J5 EV enters an increasingly competitive Malaysian EV market, where buyers have more choices than ever before.
Ultimately, the J5 EV’s success may come down to whether buyers see its combination of price, practicality, performance and charging convenience as compelling enough to choose it over both petrol-powered SUVs and similarly priced electric alternatives.
But one thing is clear: at RM118,800, the Jaecoo J5 EV is making a serious attempt to bring a more accessible electric SUV into Malaysia’s mainstream market.
