Sime Motors Unveils BYD Mansion Macalister – Malaysia’s First Heritage-Concept EV Showroom
Penang has gained a unique addition to its growing electric vehicle landscape with the opening of BYD Mansion Macalister, a distinctive new showroom that blends historical architecture with the future of mobility.
Developed by Sime Motors through its authorised retail partner Sime Darby Beyond Auto, the boutique showroom represents the first BYD heritage-concept showroom in Malaysia. Located along the iconic Jalan Macalister in Penang, the facility transforms a century-old building into a modern retail destination dedicated to electric mobility.
A Historic Landmark Reimagined for the EV Era
Rather than replacing the historical structure with a new building, the project focuses on adaptive reuse and restoration. The century-old property, once a familiar commercial site within the local community, has been carefully refurbished while preserving its distinctive architectural identity.
Inside, visitors will find a contemporary retail environment that contrasts yet complements the building’s heritage character. The concept creates a space where the past meets the future, reflecting how traditional architecture can coexist with advanced EV technology.
The property sits on a 26,994-square-foot land parcel, with around 9,000 square feet of built-up showroom space designed to provide a more curated automotive experience compared to conventional dealerships.
A Boutique EV Gallery Experience
Unlike a typical showroom packed with vehicles, BYD Mansion Macalister adopts a gallery-style layout where cars are displayed almost like art pieces. The floor can accommodate up to four vehicles at a time, allowing visitors to appreciate each model in a more relaxed and immersive setting.
Customers can also enjoy lounge-style consultation areas where product discussions and purchase arrangements take place in a more personalised environment. A private delivery room has also been incorporated for a special and memorable vehicle handover experience.
The showroom reflects the growing presence of BYD in Malaysia, as the brand continues to strengthen its presence in the country’s rapidly expanding EV market.
Full Service Support and Charging Infrastructure
Beyond the showroom space, the site also offers a comprehensive aftersales facility. The on-site service centre includes:
- Five work bays
- One alignment bay
- Three service reception bays
These facilities allow customers to manage maintenance and servicing without needing to visit a separate location.
In addition, the mansion includes a charging hub equipped with one 60 kW DC fast charger and seven AC chargers, providing additional charging infrastructure for EV drivers in Penang.
This integration of showroom, service centre and charging hub positions the location as more than just a dealership, it functions as a complete electric mobility destination.
Strengthening BYD’s Presence in Malaysia
According to Andrew Basham, Managing Director of Sime Motors, the project represents a new direction for automotive retail.
He explained that transforming a historic building into a modern EV showroom not only preserves a piece of Penang’s architectural heritage but also creates a meaningful space for customers to experience the future of mobility.
Meanwhile, Jacob Ma, Deputy General Manager of BYD Malaysia, highlighted that the showroom reflects the brand’s commitment to growing closer to local communities while delivering a premium customer experience.
The opening also marks another milestone in the partnership between Sime Darby Beyond Auto and BYD, which began in December 2022. Since then, the network has expanded with locations across Malaysia, including showrooms in Ara Damansara, TREC Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru.
With the launch of BYD Mansion Macalister, the collaboration continues to grow while introducing a more distinctive retail concept that combines heritage, innovation and electric mobility.
For Penang’s EV community, the new showroom offers not only a place to explore the latest BYD vehicles, but also a thoughtfully designed space where history and technology come together under one roof.
