A New Chapter: e-POWER Takes Over

The biggest transformation comes under the bonnet.

Unlike the previous C27 Serena that relied on a conventional 2.0L petrol engine with mild hybrid assistance, the C28 adopts Nissan’s unique e-POWER system, a series-hybrid setup where the wheels are driven purely by an electric motor.

Here’s how it works:

  • 1.4L HR14DDe naturally-aspirated engine (98 PS / 123 Nm)
→ Acts solely as a generator
  • 1.77 kWh lithium-ion battery (mounted under the floor)
  • Electric motor driving the front wheels
    → 163 PS and 315 Nm

The result? Instant electric torque delivery with the smoothness and quietness of an EV but without the need to plug in.

Drivers can toggle between Eco, Standard and Sport modes, while B-mode and e-Pedal enable stronger regenerative braking and near one-pedal driving in urban traffic.

Improved Comfort, Reduced Motion Sickness

Nissan didn’t just electrify the powertrain, it reworked the chassis and cabin for better family comfort.

The C28 Serena gets:

  • Redeveloped SUV-based front suspension
  • 20% more rigid stabiliser
  • 50% increased suspension member rigidity
  • Improved steering system rigidity

According to ETCM, these upgrades reduce steering corrections by 23% compared to the previous generation, while braking behaviour has been refined to reduce pitch, all aimed at minimising motion sickness for passengers.

Inside, the Serena features:

  • Zero gravity-inspired seats
  • 2-2-3 seating layout
  • Up to 13 seating configurations
  • ISOFIX mounts in second row
  • Up to 15 cupholders (depending on variant)

Higher trims receive:

  • Dual 12.3-inch displays
  • Nissan Connect with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay
  • 14-inch rear entertainment monitor
  • Six USB ports + wireless charger

The redesigned dashboard improves ergonomics, relocating the electronic gear selector and freeing up more usable storage space.

Practicality Meets Premium Touches

Family usability remains a key strength.

Depending on variant, you’ll get:

  • Hands-free powered sliding doors
  • Powered tailgate (Shiro Premium Highway Star)
  • Acoustic windscreen glass (higher variants)
  • Tri-beam LED projector headlamps

Safety is comprehensive across the range:

  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Driver Attention Monitoring

The top three variants add Nissan ProPILOT, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane intervention and blind spot intervention, plus an Around View Monitor with moving object detection.

Locally Assembled, Electrified Future

The C28 Serena e-POWER is locally assembled (CKD) in Serendah, Selangor, making it the first Nissan e-POWER model to be assembled in Malaysia.

Warranty coverage includes:

  • 5 years / 100,000 km vehicle warranty
  • 8 years / 160,000 km for e-POWER components

With its electrified driving experience, improved ride comfort and premium practicality, the new Serena aims to redefine what Malaysian families expect from an MPV.

But the big question remains, at nearly RM180k for the top variant, is the Serena e-POWER still the segment benchmark?

That’s something worth exploring deeper.
