Perodua Charges Ahead: First EV Set to Debut Soon as It Strengthens Malaysia’s Automotive Future

RAWANG, 12 November 2025 – Malaysia’s leading carmaker, Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua), is shifting into high gear as it accelerates its transformation towards a cleaner and smarter mobility future.

During Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Perodua’s headquarters today, which also marked the rollout of Perodua’s 5.5 millionth vehicle – President and CEO Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad reaffirmed the company’s strong commitment to building a resilient and competitive automotive ecosystem in Malaysia.

“As we move forward, Perodua is ready to take on the challenges of the future — not just as a carmaker, but as an enabler of Malaysia’s transition to cleaner, smarter mobility,” said Zainal.

Perodua’s First-Ever Electric Vehicle Coming Soon

Zainal confirmed that Perodua’s first fully electric vehicle (EV) will be unveiled soon, a major milestone in the automaker’s journey towards sustainability and innovation.

Backed by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), Perodua aims to play a key role in developing Malaysia’s EV ecosystem through strategic collaborations with national partners such as Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Telekom Malaysia (TM), and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas).

“The future of the automotive industry is not just about vehicles, but the entire ecosystem that supports them, from energy and connectivity to sustainability and innovation,” Zainal explained.

Driving Long-Term Growth and Innovation

Since 2014, Perodua has invested RM1.8 billion into its Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd plant, reinforcing its position as one of the most advanced local automotive facilities. For 2025, the company has allocated RM1.56 billion in capital expenditure for the Perodua Group to further strengthen its manufacturing, sales, and after-sales operations, as well as its research and development (R&D) capabilities.

“Our commitment lies in investing in the future of both Perodua and Malaysia,” Zainal added.

Anwar: Perodua’s EV a Milestone for the Nation

Prime Minister Anwar praised Perodua’s progress, calling the upcoming EV a symbol of Malaysia’s innovation and self-reliance. He also revealed that the launch of Perodua’s first EV will take place by the end of this month, marking a historic moment for the national automaker and the country’s automotive industry.

“This car represents everything we stand for – sustainability, affordability, and advanced technology. It’s built by Malaysians, for Malaysians,” said Anwar, adding that he will personally act as Perodua’s top salesman when promoting Malaysia abroad.

Anwar highlighted that the EV project will not only drive technological advancement, but also stimulate job creation, R&D activities, and economic growth, aligning with the government’s Madani economic principles.

Regional Focus: Strengthening Market Position

Meanwhile, Perodua is also re-evaluating its business strategy in Indonesia, where its popular Myvi model is marketed as the Daihatsu Sirion. As Indonesia prepares to develop its own national car within the next three years, Perodua is preparing to adapt with new products and strategies to sustain its market presence.

“While challenges remain, we believe fresh product offerings and renewed focus will help Perodua stay competitive in the region,” said Zainal.

A Step Closer to a Greener, Smarter Malaysia

With strong government backing and strategic industry partnerships, Perodua’s entry into the EV segment marks not only the beginning of a new chapter for the company, but also a key turning point in Malaysia’s journey towards a sustainable and high-tech automotive future.
