All-New Proton Saga Cross Spotted: Sub-RM70,000 Price, 1.5L Engine, 120 PS, Launch Expected in 2026?

Fresh details surrounding the all-new Proton Saga Cross have surfaced online, generating strong interest among Malaysian car buyers. Internally known as AMA02, the Saga Cross is expected to make its debut in 2026, positioning itself as a more rugged, crossover-inspired evolution of the popular Proton Saga.
If the latest information is accurate, the Saga Cross will combine affordable pricing, improved practicality, and modern technology, potentially redefining the entry-level crossover segment.
Powertrain: Petrol and Hybrid Options Reportedly in the Pipeline
According to early reports, the Proton Saga Cross could be offered with two powertrain options: a conventional petrol engine and a more advanced hybrid variant.
The petrol version is said to use Proton’s familiar 1.5L i-GT naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine (BHE15), producing 120 PS and 150 Nm of torque. Power will reportedly be sent to the wheels via an Aisin 4-speed automatic transmission, with an estimated 0–100 km/h time of around 10 seconds — respectable figures for its class.

Hybrid Variant: Strong Performance with Excellent Fuel Economy
More interestingly, a hybrid version of the Saga Cross is also rumored to be in development. This variant could feature a Series-Parallel hybrid system paired with 1 DHT (Dedicated Hybrid Transmission).
The electric motor is estimated to deliver 100–130 kW (approximately 170 hp) with 200–240 Nm of torque. In this setup, electric power handles low-speed city driving, while the petrol engine takes over during high-speed cruising. Combined fuel consumption is reportedly as low as 3.5–3.9 L/100 km, making it one of the most efficient models in its segment.

Exterior Design: Rugged Crossover Styling with a Sporty Edge
In terms of design, the Saga Cross is expected to adopt a light off-road-inspired crossover look, with increased ride height, SUV-style body cladding, and sportier aerodynamic elements. These enhancements aim to give the car a more commanding road presence compared to the standard Saga.
Overall proportions are also expected to be larger, offering better cabin space while retaining urban-friendly dimensions.
Interior: Familiar Yet Modernised Cabin
Inside, the Saga Cross is expected to retain a layout similar to the standard Saga but with notable upgrades. Expected features include a fully digital instrument cluster, a touchscreen infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and leather seats on higher variants.
These enhancements would help the Saga Cross appeal to younger buyers and first-time car owners seeking modern connectivity without breaking the bank.
Expected Launch and Pricing: A Game Changer?
The Proton Saga Cross is rumored to launch in 2026, though Proton has yet to officially confirm its development. Unofficial sources suggest pricing could start below RM70,000, which—if true—would make it one of the most affordable crossover-style vehicles in Malaysia.
If Proton delivers on pricing, performance, and features, the Saga Cross could become a strong contender in the budget crossover segment.
