Proton eMAS 7 finally gets Android Auto via OTA — here’s what else is new

Proton eMAS 7 owners have been waiting patiently, and the wait is finally over. The national carmaker has begun rolling out an over-the-air (OTA) software update that adds Android Auto support to its first electric vehicle, marking a major milestone in the model’s digital evolution.

The update, identified as Flyme Auto S version 1.2.0, was first spotted by members of the Proton eMAS 7 Community Malaysia Facebook group. According to users who have already received it, the rollout is happening in stages, although some owners have also managed to install the update directly at Proton eMAS service centres.

Android Auto arrives — wired and wireless

As previously outlined in Proton’s 2025 software roadmap, the Q4 update finally enables Android Auto connectivity, supporting both wired and wireless connections. This allows drivers to seamlessly access navigation, music, calls and messaging apps directly from the eMAS 7’s infotainment display — a feature many owners have been eagerly anticipating since launch.

With Android Auto now available, the eMAS 7 joins a growing list of EVs offering broader smartphone integration, following the Apple CarPlay support introduced earlier this year via OTA.

More than just smartphone connectivity

Beyond Android Auto, the version 1.2.0 update brings several quality-of-life improvements aimed at refining the overall driving experience. These include:

  • Improved screen brightness adjustment, making the infotainment display easier to view under varying lighting conditions
  • Enhanced Bahasa Melayu optimisation, with clearer and more accurate translations across the interface
  • Additional system optimisations for improved stability and responsiveness

Some users have also noticed new subtle enhancements, such as audible feedback when switching driving modes, suggesting further refinement to the vehicle’s user interface and driving interaction.

A pattern of continuous improvements

The Android Auto update continues Proton’s commitment to quarterly OTA updates for the eMAS 7 throughout 2025. Previous updates have addressed software bugs, improved charging and driving performance (including ABS tuning), added support for third-party apps, and introduced new low-speed pedestrian warning sounds — including the well-known “ice cream truck” jingle and alternative sound options, as well as the ability to disable it entirely.

While Proton has yet to reveal a detailed update roadmap for 2026, the company has reiterated that it will continue refining the eMAS 7 based on real-world customer feedback.

How it compares to the eMAS 5

Interestingly, Proton’s newer and more affordable eMAS 5 comes with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard from launch. However, it operates on a different infotainment platform known as Atlas Auto, unlike the Flyme Auto system used in the eMAS 7.

For eMAS 7 owners, though, this latest OTA update reinforces Proton’s long-term support strategy — proving that early adopters won’t be left behind as technology evolves.
