Shah Alam LRT Line Nears Completion, Set to Launch in September

Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced that the highly anticipated Shah Alam LRT line is now 99% complete and expected to begin operations on September 30, 2025. The 37.8km line, which runs from Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya to Johan Setia in Klang, will be officially handed over to Prasarana Malaysia Berhad by the project’s turnkey contractor on July 31.

The line’s main contractor, Setia Utama LRT3 Sdn Bhd, has initiated a comprehensive trial and fault-free testing phase starting in mid-April and continuing through late June. This initial round is being evaluated by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) to ensure system safety and operational readiness.
Once this phase receives the green light, the second stage will involve Rapid Rail carrying out a 60-day trial run, backed by technical support from the contractor. This phase is scheduled to run throughout July and August.

The LRT3 project, which has undergone several cost revisions since its inception, originally carried a budget of RM9 billion in 2016. However, due to various developments, the project cost surged to RM31.7 billion, excluding additional charges. In 2018, the then-government revised the scope by removing several stations, reducing the overall expenditure to RM16.63 billion.

With the finish line now in sight, the Shah Alam LRT promises to be a significant milestone in enhancing urban mobility and public transportation connectivity in the Klang Valley.
